Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Nora Tavitian and I have been at ADNSW since August 2020. I have a Master of Human Rights and prior to joining ADNSW I worked in various government and non-government organisations, including as a Community Corrections Officer for four years.
Why did you join Anti-Discrimination NSW?
I heard positive feedback about the work of ADNSW which initially sparked my interest in the organisation. I’m passionate about working with marginalised communities and I wanted to work for an organisation where I could assist in empowering people through information sharing and where I could also leverage my background and skills in a challenging role.
Can you describe your role?
I'm an Enquiries and Liaison Officer. Our team is usually the first point of contact for members of the public who might want to discuss an incident that has occurred or want general information regarding discrimination, sexual harassment, victimisation or vilification. Part of my role is to also refer people to appropriate services that could provide them with further assistance, such as community legal centres for legal advice or disability advocacy services.
I respond to both telephone and written enquiries and I also conduct preliminary investigations on complaints. This might involve contacting complainants to gather further information necessary for ADNSW to complete an assessment.
What do you like most about your job?
The nature of the work sometimes involves handling complicated enquiries which keeps it interesting for me and ensures no day is the same. I work with a supportive, diverse and highly experienced team and I love being able to learn from each other. There are also many opportunities to collaborate across teams such as the Community Engagement team and this gives me the chance to contribute to different projects.
What is your advice to someone wanting to work in a similar role or organisation as yourself?
I think that if you’re passionate about this type of work, I would encourage you to always be open to various opportunities where you can work closely with diverse communities; whether it’s in employment, volunteering etc. Each may serve as its own learning opportunity and potentially help develop critical skills that could be relevant to a similar role.
